The 2025 Ford Explorer is one of the safest SUVs on the road today. This safety is due to Ford’s innovative design and an array of advanced safety features that protect you and your passengers. Ford Co-Pilot360 is a driver assistance suite that uses sonar, camera, and radar technology to scan the surrounding area for potential threats. We want to tell you about how some of these features help keep you safe.
Pre-Collision Assist
Driving can feel dangerous at times, particularly in heavy traffic, as you have to anticipate other drivers’ often bizarre behavior. This system acts as an additional set of eyes, watching vehicles ahead using a camera and radar. If a car in front of you slows, the radar will identify the distance closing and determine if an accident is possible.
Should the system calculate you’re closing too fast, you’ll receive visual and audio alerts to warn you to slow down or take other action to prevent a collision. If you’re unable to react fast enough, the system’s Automatic Emergency Braking feature will activate and stop your Explorer. This almost instantaneous reaction can prevent an accident or reduce the damage caused.
Reverse Brake Assist
When you shift into reverse, you have to continually scan the area behind you for vehicles, pedestrians, animals, or even wayward shopping carts. This feature makes reversing easier and safer, using radar sensors to scan directly behind your Explorer and in arcs to the left and right. It’s automatically active at speeds between 1 and 7mph when you shift into reverse.
If anything enters the radar’s field of view, you’ll hear a warning noise and a warning indicator will illuminate to identify the object’s location. This gives you enough time to stop or move forward to avoid an impact with the object. If you don’t apply the brakes, the system applies hard braking for you to stop your vehicle.
Blind Spot Information System (BLIS)
This feature protects you when you change lanes. A vehicle can easily enter a blind spot, and you won’t see it until it’s too late to avoid an accident. BLIS uses radar sensors that monitor blind spots and instantly warn you if a vehicle enters one. A warning alert will sound and an icon will illuminate on the corresponding side-view mirror.
If you’re changing lanes when the warnings appear, your steering wheel resists turning in that direction. It supplies additional torque to allow you to turn back into your lane and avoid a collision.
